Pipe Masters Day 1

Day one of the Pipe Masters went down in pretty good conditions, mostly at Backdoor. The biggest talk on the beach, in an event dedicated to the memory of Andy Irons, was the birth of his son yesterday morning. Bruce Irons was on hand to welcome his new nephew into the world, before flying over to the North Shore for his round one heat - unfortunately he never got the waves and was straight out of the contest.

Another local man was on hand though to carry the flag. Dusty Payne, in need of a 9th place finish at Pipe to requalify for the WCT next year, won both his round 1&2 heats to keep the dream alive.

For the Saffers, Travis Logie had a dismal round 1 heat and all our hopes now rest on Jordy Smith, who surfs in the round 3 against local wild card, Dave Wassel. Jordy will want to prove to the world that he has what it takes to win at Pipe, just like Kelly and Andy before him.
