Blood Curdling Superbike Racing - Isle of Man TT 2011

Flying superbikes are a common site on the Isle.
This just blows my mind! What the hell are these guys thinking? Just watch the video and you will know what i am talking about. Hells, I got to get to this one day!

The Official Review of the 2011 Isle of Man will be packed with jaw-dropping action from around the legendary 37.73-mile road course, plus all the usual interviews, behind-the-scenes access and bonus features.

The 2011 TT promises to be one of the most competitive ever, with top riders and leading teams lining up to take on the challenge.

The great John McGuinness also returns and will be looking to get back on the top step of the podium after last year's disappointment, adding yet more victories to his 15-win tally.

Former TAS Suzuki teammates Bruce Anstey and Cameron Donald, both TT winners, have new challenges for 2011 -- Anstey is with Padgetts and Donald has moved to with Wilson Craig.

Back in the TAS squad, Guy Martin is the new recruit -- he'll be looking to put the 170mph crash of last year behind him and finally land that elusive first TT win.

Plus, Keith Amor, Michael and William Dunlop, Ryan Farquhar and Michael Rutter will be among the stars hoping to battle for victories in 2011.

There's also a wealth of talented newcomers due to line up for the 2011 TT, including short circuit ace Simon Andrews.

The three-wheel racing will also be scintillating, with Austrian Klaus Klaffenbock back with Dan Sayle and determined to defend the double sidecar TT wins he scored last year.

Stunning trackside and aerial camera work will be skilfully combined with the very best on-board footage to give you the ultimate view of the TT course and let you share every moment of excitement from every race.

The Official Review will also include interviews with the stars, plenty of bonus material and a look at some of the off-track excitement. There'll also be plenty of coverage of the star-studded events organised to mark the 100th anniversary of racing on the Mountain course and Yamaha's 50th anniversary.

Manny Mania South Africa

Skaters in Jozi had a busy weekend with both the JHB qualifiers, on Saturday, followed the next day by the SA Finals of the Red Bull Manny Mania.

Kanya looked pretty stoked to make the Finals.
Kanya Spani of Sandown won the qualifier for Red Bull Manny Mania 2011 at the Revolution Skate Park in Kempton Park, Johannesburg.  He and 3 other qualifiers the event went on to compete in the South Africa finals of Red Bull Manny Mania, the largest international event for amateur manual skaters.

“I feel really stoked about winning. It was unexpected, so I’m really stoked. I'm a little nervous about the final, but I know most of the skaters so it's going to be fun.”

The Manny Mania 2011 Finalists
From 32 competitors at the event today, the three other skaters selected to compete in the final included: Anthony Monalonca, Dada Marumo and Michael Bervoets.

Moses on his way to the win.
The final day kicked off and the pressure was on. In the end Dlamini Dlamini from La Lucia and Dada Marumo from Johannesburg finished second and third, receiving prizes from Session magazine and Element.
According to Red Bull Manny Mania judge Brendan Body of Session magazine it was a very difficult competition to judge, due to the high level of skating.

Moses Adams from Milnerton was the winner of Red Bull Manny Mania 2011 in South Africa, held at the Revolution Skate Park in Kempton Park, Johannesburg.  He beat out 12 other finalists at the South African finals as part of the largest international event for amateur manual skaters.

“I didn't expect to win, but gave it my all. At the end my legs were so tired and numb, so I just tried to act like I was alone at the park skating. And I thought, if I can pull this off then maybe I can win. The event was awesome, I had fun and now I'm exhausted.”
Moses Adams will be flown to New York City on an all expenses paid trip to represent South Africa at the Red Bull Manny Mania World Final for amateurs on August 20, 2011. The winner of this event will get a chance to step into the big leagues by competing in the invite-only Red Bull Manny Mania Pro Event, on Sunday, August 21 in New York City.

Dylan Mitchell can like to Wakeskate

Check out Dylan Mitchell's latest offering of Wakeskate magic. I have no idea how these guys do these tricks with no bindings let alone without ramming their sphincters through their noses. But, I gave wakeskating a go and it was pretty fun, there was no flipping though, except for the old guy on skis behind me flipping me the bird!

Red Bull X-Fighters - Rome 2011

Rome, Italy -- The wave would not stop rolling through the Stadio Olimpico crowd as Nate Adams and Andre Villa were revving up for the start of the final showdown battle on two wheels. When it finally did, Adams got off 18 flawless jumps within the 120-second time limit to win over the five-member gladiator jury, picking up his fifth victory in the 11-year history of the Red Bull X-Fighters. "Now I'm going for the Tour title," the 27-year-old American said afterwards. "It was the most difficult win in my career after I had a crash in Qualifying."
On the biggest FMX course ever built in Italy -- with 11 kickers and 8 dirt landings -- the athletes pushed themselves to their limits, jumping distances of up to 30 meters and as high as 15 meters. Co-favorite Dany Torres (ESP), who won in Rome last year, sent a shiver through the big crowd when he crashed at the end of a botched landing in the second round. His bike veered off the course and into a barrier. "I came here with five broken bones that weren't quite healed but nevertheless won the Qualifying round," he said.

Kieran stoked with his first place at Red Bull Manny Mania (Photo: Kolesky)
The Red Bull Manny Mania event in Stellenbosch was really good. I never truly realized now many variations of the classic skate manual were possible. Check out all the action on me video -

Cape Town Bike Festival - Launch Tonight

Cape Town Stadium will be getting tons of dirt put in!
To say I am excited about the Cape Town Bike Festival (CTBF) might just be the understatement of the year! Outside of the odd game of football and shows from the likes of U2, the stadium has not had much on, as far as world class events go, since the 2010 World Cup. That all changes this year as the CTBF rolls into the stadium over three days in December. What will we be seeing at the launch this evening in Cape Town? So far we have been told that the Festival will have a Lifestyle Expo for those that love the biking lifestyle, Miss Bike SA (Hot ladies and Bikes, sounds good), Supercross and Junior MX racing (Something not seen in SA stadiums for many years), a Tattoo Expo and art exhibition, AMD Custom Bike Build competition, the incredible Masters of Dirt FMX show every night and to round things off an incredible three international bands - 1 for each night. Shew, I just had to take a breath and calm myself down there...

Masters of Dirt is the world's biggest and best FMX show. I have wanted to see one of these for a very long time and the fact that I can see it every night for the length of the CTBF is bloody exciting. Some of the world's best FMX, Quad and Mini-Bike hell men will be on display, as well as our very own "Sick" Nick de Wit. Let's not forget the fiery and very hot "Fuel Girls" who are a big part of the show. Got to admit to being equally excited to hang with the girls backstage at the show, hehe.

Though the CTBF have not released the names of the Bands yet for the three nights at the Festival, I am told that with my help, CTBF will be asking you the fans for your opinions on this integral part of the entertainment showpiece. So, once I know the options, you will know and you can vote for your choices for the three nights. One band that has already been closely linked to the CTBF are our locally born superstars, Seether. One can only hope it is true!

So, much excitement and I will have more information tomorrow once I have attended the launch event tonight and found out more. This looks to be one of the biggest events Cape Town has ever seen and I will be along with you in tow for the entire ride! In the meantime, why not make some suggestions for bands you would like to see in the comments section! Right, time to get ready for the launch and a couple of cold ones with the crew.

Still Ripping - Byron Howarth Searching

Photo courtesy of I am Wok
In my youth, we as SA surfers entered the world at large again and became a part of the greater surfing community - due to apartheid falling away. In this time there were very few SA surfers who could make the grade internationally. There were two however that really stood out, Franky O and Byron Howarth. Both of these guys were sent off searching with Tom Curren and the Search team and got to live and experience a life we as SA surfers pretty much did not even realize existed. Many years down the line and Byron is now living in Oz and working for Insight. He can still surf though. Good to know the man who inspired my wonder lust for travel is still doing it himself. Check him out in the Mentawais recently, tube city!

Seb Toot is da man! - Snowboarding

The man has crazy jib style on top of his air game.
Seb Toots backs up his triple cork with an urban jib edit. This guy has mad style and has taken his big air kingpin attitude to the urban and jib zone. This video blew my mind!

The new kid - Jack Robinson

There is always the next big thing. No matter the sport, no matter the year. it seems surfing's next big thing is a wee grom called Jack Robinson.

Regarded by many as the best young surfer on the planet, the snowy-haired Margaret River prodigy has redefined what a 13-year-old with a surfboard is capable of. His surfing at places like Grajagan, the North Shore of Oahu and Snapper Rocks has dented the egos of surfers twice his size and twice his age… while captivating them at the same time.

Now he has resigned with Quiksilver and no doubt makes more money than us hard working grown ups. What are your thoughts?

I wanna surf Greenbush!

So many peeps ask me if it is worth going on a Mentawai Boat trip.  I have been and scored mental waves, surfed 6 hours a day and caught some pretty impressive fish. It was amazing! Unfortunately, we were there a few years back and Greenbush had not been promoted to the general public yet. Boy, when I go back, I am going to be testing my Pig Dog. This wave looks incredible and my pals that have surfed it, swear blind it's the best left tube they have surfed. So, to answer the question, HELL YES, you wanna go!

Mr Price Pro - the Wildcards are ready for the World

Greg "Foot" Emslie will give the foreigners a tough time in his heats. (Photo: ASP)
BALLITO, Kwa-Zulu Natal / South Africa (Tuesday, June 7, 2011) – Six talented South African surfers have been granted wildcard entries into the prestigious R1.7 Million ASP PRIME Mr Price Pro Ballito from July 4-10, 2011.
Greg Emslie (East London), Davey Brand (Cape Town) and Steven Sawyer (Jeffreys Bay) will make their way into the event courtesy of Mr Price wildcards while Klee Strachan (Winklespruit), Brendon Gibbens (Cape Town) and David Weare (Durban) will take on the worlds’ best courtesy of ASP Africa wildcards.
Slotted directly into the round of 96, these six surfers will take on the event’s top seeds right from their first heat where they will be guaranteed a minimum of R5000 (US$ 750) should they bow out early and an enormous R270 000 (US$40,000) should they win the entire event!
The Mr Price Pro Ballito’s exclusive 96-man field means only the top ranked surfers on the ASP World Rankings qualify for a place in the main event, making a wildcard entry invaluable for non ASP World ranked surfers.
ASP World Tour retiree Greg Emslie, who flew the South African flag for a record nine years at the elite level, knows just how exceptional an opportunity like this one is. The powerful natural-footer (left-foot forward stance) will have the hopes of South Africa on his shoulders as the most experienced of this year’s wildcard deck.
“I can’t wait,” Emslie said. “To have the chance to compete against the top surfers in the world is always special. I feel I am surfing better and more progressive than ever now that I am retired and I look forward to taking on the internationals in a few weeks time.”
Another skilled international campaigner is David Weare. Weare competed at elite level for two years in 2006 and 2009 and although now retired from international competition, Weare remains a fierce competitor capable of causing any number of upsets at this year’s event.
“I'm super excited to have made it into this event,” Weare said. “It'll be good to see all the crew again and get to surf against them again. I'm still a competitor at heart so I'll definitely be giving it my all at this event!”
Young, up-and-coming talent Davey Brand, 18, will attract plenty of attention when he hits the water for his first heat. Captaining the South African team to the ISA Quiksilver World Games to Peru recently where he placed third in the U18 division, Brand welcomes the opportunity to put his skills to the test against some of the ASP World Title Tour surfers.
“I am so gratefully for this opportunity,” Brand said.” I’m taking it on with a nothing to loose everything to gain attitude and will give it everything I’ve got to make it as far as I can in the competition.”
A total of seven South African surfers have also qualified for the main event via their ASP World ranking. They include World No. 2 Jordy Smith (RSA), former ASP World Tour campaigner Travis Logie (Dbn), Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay), former ASP World Tour campaigner Royden Bryson (Cape Town), Brandon Jackson (Durban North), Rudy Palmboom (Bluff) and Dale Staples (St Francis Bay).
Eight South African surfers will compete in the trials for the remaining two spots into the main event. The trialists are Beyrick De Vries (Umhlanga), Chad Du Toit (Dbn), Kyle Lane (Umhlanga), Frankie Obherhozer (Scottburgh), Mathew Bromley (Cape Town), Alan Johns (Ballito), Sean Holmes (CT) and Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffreys Bay).
The eight trialists will compete in two, four man heats with the top two from each heat advancing into a four-man final. First and second place finalists will advance into the main event.
The Mr Price Pro Ballito includes an action packed beach festival including beach entertainment; extreme sports, dedicated children’s programmes and a lifestyle and retail area provide plenty of daytime fun. The ever-popular Mr Price Pro Music concerts will take place on the evening of 8 and 9 July at Salt Rock at no cost to festivalgoers.
For more information log on to www.mrpricepro.com or like us on facebook http://www.facebook.com/mrpricepro.
Casey Grant is one noticeable surfer missing from the line up. (Photo: ZigZag)
I have to be honest, I am very surprised not to see Casey Grant in the Wild Card comp. He came second last year to Jordy Smith and was certainly one of the stand out surfers during the event. There has been no media or comment about this, but surely one of the ASP Africa wild cards should have gone to him? Not to say any of the chosen surfers are not deserving, but last years runner up, come on! I would love to hear your thoughts on this...

The TAND invitational 2011 - BodyBoard SA's mental Slab Contest

These guys are nuts! I have watched my bodyboard mates splatter themselves on sandbars and rock slabs for years - never quite figured it out. But hell, it makes for good viewing. Thats why I will definately be going to watch this lot -

After years of shrouded mystery, secret road trips, blind-folded drives in the boot and turf wars we have come to this, the pinnacle of bodyboarding events in South Africa...

Welcome to the TAND Invitational 2011

Let me paint you a brief picture before we get down to the nitty gritty details.

A heavy flat bottom reef on the West Coast unloads with unprecedented force in the middle of nowhere with nothing surrounding you but rugged beauty and the sound of wild waves ringing out. For years, even until this present day the locals continue to dominate and blow minds. Every other top bodyboarder in South Africa has used it as a proving ground. Jared Houston attributed it to his success in his aerial assault on the world tour and one of his favourite spots in S.A. Mark McCarthy used it as a training ground for the Shark Island Challenge in Australia where he went on to place 2nd! Top international riders have made wild statement calling it the best wave in S.A and they can’t wait to come back and surf it.
Tomas Degenaar
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the amphitheatre for the biggest, heaviest bodyboarding contest South Africa has yet to lay its eyes upon.

The brainchild behind this event, Jarret Johnson, took a step out into the unknown wilds and approached me with this concept, asking for help and ideas. A good few hour’s worth of banter and a few crazy thoughts later we went for it and committed. The local boys gave us

the go ahead, which was the main thing and it was all on from there. The Facebook page went up and within a few days we were an internet spamming sensation rivalling the likes of Rebecca Black.

Then one cold evening Jarret received a phone call, it was a +44 number....England!! It was Mr Billy Thiel, South African bodyboarding legend and international travel guru. Well known amongst the international bodyboarding community; His knowledge of all things boogie is almost infinite. He recently started up his brand new board label, THIEL BOARD CO., which we had heard about so we knew that this wasn’t a small fry phone call.

After a few minutes of shaky voices and stuttered words, long story short, this man is committed to South African Bodyboarding in a BIG way and has a vision for it that extends way beyond any selfish need. He wants to see it grow to levels that haven’t even been dreamt of yet.

Mark McCarthy
He is so committed in fact that THIEL BOARD CO. has come on board the TAND Invitational 2011 as the main sponsor and thrown into the golden pot a massive R10 000 in cash!!!! Yes, you heard right!

Now that your jaws are on the floor, we’ll get down to details.

16 riders. 4 Locals, 4 Western Province, 4 KZN and 4 Speciality entries.

This is the 1st event of its kind in South Africa, being an invitational event with riders being voted in by their peers.
We are running it in a standard 4-man knockout heat format, with the top 2 riders from each heat advancing until finally the history books are written!
We have a 2 week waiting period to allow for the best possible day to run the event. It will last only 4 hours enabling us to have the best conditions of the day.
ALL finalists will be receiving moneybags worth of cash, with obviously the winner being rewarded with more cash than he could think of, all courtesy of THIEL BOARD CO.

Happy Birthday Taj Burrows

Taj Burrows turns 33 today. He is the same age as me and still competing for the World Title, much respect for the guy - he could win this year. Taj has always been one of my favorite surfers to watch - also a great guy to get on the beers with and have a good time! So in honor of his big bday, I thought I would put up some of my favorite video sections online.

Happy Birthday Taj!

Red Bull Manny Mania - Meet SA Skater, Jean-Marc Johannes

Manny mania gets underway here in South Africa on Saturday. I will be at the Cape event with camera in hand. Joining me for the day as your liason to the event, will be Cape Town skater and Red Bull team rider, Jean-Marc Johannes - or Johnny as he likes to be called. So meet the man and get inside his head...

Resides: Cape Town, South Africa
Sponsors: Red Bull, Almost Skateboards, DVS footwear, Volcom Clothing, Sport Unlimited Stores and TuneBug

Recent achievements:
- Placed top-three in Ultimate X Games and PRO X Games in 2010.
- Placed 1st in the Advanced Category in Spring Tide contests (2007-2010).
- Given a spot in 2010 and 2011 from DAMB AM Costa Mesa to compete in DAMB AM contests.
- Placed 1st at the Street Cred 2010 contest.
- Placed top-5 and 1st in Best Trick at the NSA Buck Tour 2005, at the age of 15.
This is huge. Wonder if he landed Manual?
Jean-Marc got into skating at a very young age. He was exposed to extreme sports as he grew up alongside BMX rider Buddy Chellan, but wasn’t sure what direction to take. Eventually his neighbourhood friends all started skating, and a fire was ignited. After almost a decade competing, Jean-Marc has risen to the top.
Johnny is from the streets of Cape Town.
“Skateboarding has given me many things,” reckons Jean-Marc, looking back. “It has made me realize that being happy is the most important thing in life. Skateboarding has given me a sense of direction, and a focus in life. It has helped me realize who I am.”
Jean-Marc is well known for thinking up new and crazy tricks, and more often than not, pulling them off. He explores concepts and ideas, and puts them into action; to the amazement of spectators and other skaters. Best Trick awards come his way, as well as accolades whenever he does something out of the ordinary.
Jean-Marc likes to compete against some of the best skateboarders; not just to be victorious, but to also learn so that he can to take his skateboarding to new heights.
The best thing about skateboarding, according to Jean-Marc, is the joy that it brings when he lands a new trick that, until that moment, has only been a visual in his mind.
Jean-Marc is also highly skilled in the forgotten art of switch, mastering most moves either regular or switch. He has a motto, ‘think fast, but move slow,’ which many people believe is the very reason why he hasn’t broken bones going for the massive moves he does. Also a skilled musician, when he’s not skating, Jean-Marc is on his guitar.

Team Hot Wheels crush the World record Distance Jump

This is pretty amazing! I remember doing the same thing with my toy cars as a young child.

The Yellow Driver of Team Hot Wheels breaks the world record for distance jump in a four-wheeled vehicle at the Indianapolis 500 on May 29th 2011. Watch as the Yellow Driver, Tanner Foust, drops 10 stories down 90 feet of orange track and soars 332 feet through the air.

XFighters Brazil 2011 - Nate Adams takes the Win

I previewed the Brazil leg and boy the guys did not let me down! Nate Adams with the win, but plenty of great riding! Check out the size of the crowd, it was mental!

600 truckloads of dirt were used to turn the "Esplanada dos Ministerios" in the heart of Brasilia into the playground for the best FMX athletes of the age.

Nate Adams of the United States pulled off the best tricks on Saturday to win the second stop of the 2011 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour in Brasilia (Brazil) in front of the greatest crowd in FMX history.

Robbie Maddison (AUS) was defeated by Adams in the final showdown in the Brazilian capital city that was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Andre Villa (NOR) took third place.
