Bones Brigade the Autobiography - The start of modern Skateboarding
The most eagerly anticipated doccy since "Dogtown and Z-Boys" is finally here. Made by Stacey Peralta, the same director, the movie spans a decade when a crew of young skaters changed the face of the sport. The movie is available on Itunes and if you are lucky like myself and a few others, you get to watch the SA premier at the Labia this Friday.
When six teenage boys came together as a skateboarding team in the 1980s, they reinvented not only their chosen sport but themselves too - as they evolved from insecure outsiders to the most influential athletes in the field.

Body High - Cokey Falkow leads in a new movie about Venice Beach
(When I heard good mate and Saffer comedic legend, Cokey Falkow, was leading in a new Indie Film based in Venice, I had to get you the lowdown. i got this totally bizarre Gonzo, Harold Geiger, who lives at the beach, to head down and get us the down low.)
A buddy told me about a film that's being shot in Venice
called “Body High”. After a couple
calls I weaseled my way down to set to check it out and talk to the cast. It's a small town so it wasn't hard to
find it. I'd tell you where the
set was but then I'd have to kill you.
So here ya go:
It's a indie flick about a pot dispensary that's down on its
luck but comes across a magical strain of weed that might just save the day, as
long as the gangsters don't get to them first.
The second I got to set the producer, Lije Sarki, greeted me
and showed me around. This did not
look like an indie film to me.
This was a full on production and nothing was spared. I was impressed from the get go. Lije took me right over to meet one of
the leads, Bug Hall.
Most of you will know Bug from his very first role as
Alfalfa in The Little Rascals or most recently recurring on Nikita. We started talking about his past and
it blew my mind that 1993 was almost twenty years ago. He said he still remembers every outfit
and every scene from that movie.
He was eight years old.
That's when he decided he wanted to “play” forever. I asked him why he wanted to do this
movie. His reply, “After I
met the director I realized how much fun it would be to do an indie film with
heart that shoots in Venice and works with a bunch of stand-up comedians. I was in.” Then the director walked up to see what
I was doing.
He introduced himself as Joe Marklin. Joe is a first-time feature maker from
the east coast. I asked him about
the film and his vision. “This
is really a family environment and this movie is a tribute to all the great
90's indies like Clerks, Friday, and
Office Space.” I
asked how him it was going.
They've been shooting for almost a week and he had this to say, “Watching
the dailies has taken a life of its own.
I couldn't be more proud of what the cast and crew are bringing to the
table. Every day I am amazed with
the magic we capture.” Joe
used to live about a block from where they are shooting. He actually wrote the movie for the
exact neighborhood they are working in.
That makes it easy, right?
I went and grabbed Lance Allen before he walked out the
door. I guess he just wrapped for
the day. He plays a gay security
guard with a hell of a sense for fashion.
I said to Lance to give me one good sentence about the film. Anything. He said, “It was either this or I would have to keep
stripping for potato salad.”
He must be one of the comedians.
Then I looked over and saw a dude who I know belonged
here. He looks like he could be my
neighbor, I live down the street.
His name is Cokey Falkow.
He's a South African star and comedian who is about as down to earth as
anyone you have ever met. So calm
and cool. I asked him about his
experience so far and he said, “Venice is the star of this film – I am
the co-star and that is a dream come true.” Well said, Cokey.
I said, “Where are all the girls?
I heard there are a ton of beautiful girls in the film.” Just then the producer came back up to
me and walked me to one of the bedrooms that were part of the set.
In there lay Mackenzie Mason. She was napping but he woke her anyway right after telling
me she was Cortana in Halo 4.
“What if she whoops my ass?”
I was a little nervous since she just woke up. Never wake someone from a nap and then drill them with
questions, especially a hot chick from a video game! I tried to be gentle and just asked for a little blurb about
her experience so far. She said, “I'm
excited for people that don't get to live here experience what an awesome world
Venice, CA has to offer, the style, the culture, everyone's gonna get a glimpse
of this wonderful little world.”
That was it. I
thought. I started to head for the
door after thanking Lije and he said I had to meet this girl from Germany and
she was the only lead in the film that I hadn't met. So I met Bella Dayne, a beautiful girl playing opposite of
Cokey Falkow. I asked her how she
felt about working on the film and she replied, “The characters perfectly
capture my first Venice experience coming to L.A. It's its own little world and it's been a blast to live in
it.” Well said, Bella.
So there you have it.
They invited me back again next week but before I left they gave me a
little USB drive with some stills from the first few days. Enjoy,
Harold Geiger
(Sounds like this could be one hell of a funny movie!)

Birdmen: The orginal dream of flight - Wingsuit Film
This is a trailer that made me want to find the film and watch it immediately. In fact it is actually downloading as we speak! Watch the trailer and see why...
BIRDMEN: The Original Dream of Flight TRAILER from Team Thirteen on Vimeo.
Birdmen is a documentary film about the dream of human flight becoming reality. For millennia, humans have looked to the sky and dreamed of arcing through the air, like birds. And now, after hundreds of thousands of years, humans can fly. It is dangerous, deadly, and requires years of training, but a select few have committed their lives to the pursuit of the purest form of human flight: Wingsuit BASE Jumping. 'Birdmen' follows the dream of human flight, from its inception in ancient times to the modern world. What started with stuntmen hurling themselves to their death from objects such as the Eiffel Tower has become a respected extreme sport in which athletes zoom through the mountains at 150mph, just inches from trees and cliff faces. During the film, professional wingsuit pilots Ellen Brennan, Mike Steen, and Matt Gerdes escort you through the inspiring yet tragic history of their ancestral birdmen and then show you the cutting edge of human flight in the year 2012. Matt, Mike, and Ellen are some of the most talented wingsuit pilots in the world – during the film, they pioneer new wingsuit flights in the European Alps and experience the highs and lows of a flying life. Finally, the future of the sport is envisioned, where scientists in Switzerland explain how pilots can soon achieve perfectly balanced and relatively safe flight paths using cruise-control autonomous systems and small engines. 'BIRDMEN' is the first documentary ever made that covers the past, present, and possible future of the sport.

Candide Thovex presents "Few Words" - The Art of Flight for Skiing
While the snowboarders have had their mass market success stories when it comes to film, most notably Travis Rice and his double success with both "That's it, That's All" and "the Art of Flight", the skiing community have had to wait until now for their big movie. Watching the trailer i could not help but draw similarities between Rice's works and this, but having said that, why not use a proven winning formula. That formula being amazing landscape and chopper shots, utilizing Phantom Camera shots throughout and of course a kick ass soundtrack. Quiksilver and Candide Thovex have found the formula and made it work. "Few Words" looks epic in scope and magnitude and I for one cannot wait to watch it.
Quiksilver Presents Candide Thovex's first feature-length film FEW WORDS. This long anticipated movie has finally become a reality for Candide Thovex , while we take a look back at his youth and early days skiing Candide shows you what it took to get to this point in his career, winning X-games gold's and breaking his back before winning the free-ride world tour. Now embarking on a mission spending 2 winters and summers filming and traveling over the world to get the best conditions possible Matt Pain and crew have captured Candide in his element and the stunning nature surrounding. Few Words will Premier in October in Paris with a world tour to follow in a city near you.

The Captain Reccomends... at the Wavescape Film Festival 2011
The Wavescape Film Festival kicked off last Friday with their annual films on the beach. It was a tad windy, but nothing to bad and those that sat it out enjoyed 2 great films. Since then, I have managed to go see the "Africa Project" at the Brass Bell, which was amazing and I have the premier of "Surfers and Sharks" tomorrow evening at the Labia. This is a film I am especially keen to see as it stars my good mate, Roosta, and was co-produced by Chris Mason from Wavescape. Here is the trailer...
Films I have watched so far and highly recommend are:
The Africa Project - The Labia, 20h30, Mon 19th Dec
Jason Hearn has worked on this film for 4 long years, but the wait was worth it. The film takes you on a gorgeous and riveting trip around Africa, showing off the various cultures, beaches and of course waves. The profiles on Franky Oberholzer and Twig are epic and the surfing from Royden Bryson, Jordy and Roosta are of world class quality! If nothing else, this film will inspire you to travel on your own continent for waves!
Splinters - The Labia, 18h15, Sat 17 Dec
I saw the trailer for this a couple of months ago online. It was a heavy thing to watch such a culture in action. The people of these remote villages in Papa New Guinea live on a totally different plane of existence to the one we live on. Woman are treated like possessions and you see some pretty brutal treatment of them through the film. These people live in a totally 3rd world existence, with no money, no infrastructure and no respect for human life! They do have waves though and a culture that has been riding waves for hundreds of years. When an Ozzy pilot leaves his surfboard behind, he begins a story that led to this film being made. It is harsh, it is beautiful and it shows how surfing can change the lives of anyone who gets to try their hand at it. Well worth a watch!
Art of Flight - The Labia, 18h15, Thurs 15th Dec
The movie that will change how Action Sports films are made from now on. Travis Rice and his mad bunch of mates travel the world with all their gear, snowmobiles, helicopters and the best slow-motion cams in the world to create a truly mind blowing cinematic experience. I cannot recommend this one enough! It also shows before the Premier of "Surfing and Sharks".
Year Zero - The Labia, 20h30, Sat 17 Dec
The first of the "Traditional" style surf movies, its actually quite different from the norm. Globe have taken their rather impressive surf team and created a "Mad Max" style world for them to travel around in and surf. The level uf surfing is amazing, especially from the likes of CJ Hobgood and Taj Burrows. Look out for the mutant right tube they surf, it is simply mental! The best part of the film though, was the music! Black Mountain, who I had never heard of before, did the entire soundtrack and its a winner!
Come Hell or High Water - The Labia, 20h30, Sun 18 Dec
As a surfer it is important to know your roots. We all started in the water, without a board, just catching waves and body surfing. This film takes you into the world of those who kept body surfing, instead of moving on like the rest of us. It is beautifully shot and some of the wave riding is truly inspiring. Look out for the monster Wedge section for a little pain and laughter. I felt really good after watching this movie and pretty amped to don my fins again and go charge some shore break!
Life Cycles - The Labia, 18h15, Fri 16th Dec
So no, this is not a surf film, but I still highly recommend you go and see it. This is truly one of the most amazing cinematic films shot in the Action Sport genre and to be able to watch it on the big screen will be amazing! It has become a cult movie in mountain biking for a reason. using new cable tracking systems, super slow-motion and great on board footage, this movie a surreal look into the world of the MTB rider.

Nitro Circus 3D - The Movie, this should be good...
I have been sitting around waiting for Season 3 of Nitro circus to arrive. It's probably my all time favorite TV Show. So first I was totally disappointed to hear that due to Travis Pastrana's ridiculous schedule, they would not be making Season 3. But happy days, now we get a full length feature film instead and in 3D at cinemas (Lets hope our SA cinemas wake up and show it.) The guys are apparently lifting the bar on the stunts in this one - they almost killed Jim DuChamp already. So to tantalize your cringe and funny taste buds, check these out...

The Africa Project - Africa's greatest surf film Premiers
Sweet Lord of the surf, I am amped for this movie! Jason Hearn has been working on the project for about 3 years now and I have got to see sporadic pieces of the footage, which have kept me frothing! South Africa's best surfers exploring Africa and SA for waves, to an insane soundtrack and with really good interviews. There is even a short piece on our history as South African surfers with legends like "Oom" John Whitmore.
I even got some shots in the film - look out for the extreme west coast and a certain tube fest on the East Coast with a big rock in the foreground!
Surfers include Jordy Smith, Travis Logie, Royden Bryson, Franky O, Shaun Holmes, Grant "Twig" Baker and many more...
The Premier is on Friday 25th November, in Cape Town and if you love surfing, the lifestyle or even just adventure, you want to be there!

Blue Crush 2
Okay, so when I was a wee nipper - I really was once upon a time - all I ever wanted to do was make movies. To be up on that big screen just like my heroes, that's what I wanted. So, thirty or so years later and I finally make it onto the set of a real Hollywood production. That's right, Hollywood!
At the beginning of the year, along with most of the Llandudno surf posse, I went to castings for Blue Crush 2, at the behest of our good friend and all round rockin gal, Lorin Barnes. To say it was a laugh would be an understatement, I thought they would put me up on the website like those idiots who ruin their reputations on Idols. But low and behold someone up top liked what they saw and 2 days before shooting began - yes that is right, 2 days before - I got the call that finally made that long held childhood dream a reality. I was going to be an actor!
Ok, so the story - a surfer girl from California does not want to go to College like her father wants - she basically has a real shitty relationship with him to, as her mother died when she was young and he throws himself into his work, instead of spending time with her. She decides to follow her mother's surfing footsteps and run away to South Africa, where she wants to surf the same spots her mother did from Durban to Jbay. She arrives in Durban, gets robbed - real surprising that, haha - and meets a local, black surfer girl, who helps her out and takes her to meet the "Surf family" at their beach house on the South Coast. This is where I come in, Max, the ex Belgian mercenary, who now loves instead of hates, surfs and is the father figure, sort of, for this dysfunctional surf family. Good times are had, until the cops destroy our house and we all jump on an ancient tour bus to Jbay. Shew! That kinda gives you an overview.
Flying up to Durban, my only consolation to the fact that I had no idea what I was in for, was that my good bud and fellow surfing journeyman, Andrew "Roosta" Lange, was also on the cast list. At least we would enter this new world of acting together - haha, nervous is probably an understatement for that first day! Luckily f0r me, Roosta was up first - and promptly got pissed on by one of the other characters. I followed screaming at the top of my lungs for what felt like 3 hours, out a tiny window on the bus - there was a "rhino" coming!
What totally blew me away on these first few days on set, was how easily it seemed to be coming to us. With no former acting experience it was pretty intimidating having 3 huge cameras and an entire set of hard working people focused on you. But you got over the fright rather quickly and moved onto actually enjoying it. The greatest secret learnt - switch off any feelings of doubt and self worry and just go with it. Acting is not a pastime for anyone who is any way self conscious!
One of the most interesting details that quickly became apparent, was that even though this was a movie about surfing - one of the primary reasons we were casted - we were not in fact going to surf that much. In fact we were primarily there to "act" as surfers. While this might strike one as very odd, and it certainly made us scratch our heads initially, it is in fact the way of the movies and something we grew to accept as we moved along. Hopefully the few sessions we did have will show us as actual surfers and not Hollywood wannabes.
During the course of the shoot we filmed in amazing locations such as Oribi Gorge (And got to do the Gorge Swing which was insane), the South Coast of Natal, Roosta's home neighbourhood and one of the best places for warm water waves in the world, Transkei - though no one was to keen on surfing at Port St Johns due to the local shark population, and finally Jbay, which is in my home area and felt like coming home with my new and very large surf family. This truly was the hi-lite for me of the entire experience - the amazing people we met and the bonds of friendship that were made. The entire crew from actors, to grips to the poor peeps stuck in the office - we all got along and it actually felt like a giant extended family.
So now the experience is behind me and we wait with baited breath for the release, which will probably only be late next year. In the meantime I am trying to get more work - Acting definitely appeals to me and I want more experience. So look out for the movie and hold thumbs for more!
