Crop Dusting with DC Rally Driver, Jon Williams

Dc Shoes phoned me up and asked if I would be keen to go and shoot with their local Rally Driver, Jon Williams. Yes, came out my mouth pretty quickly. So with the RED Camera crew of Heart Media along for the ride, Black Media went and spent a day in the Cape Fields (Canola Fields) with the Sasol Rally team. This is shot on 2 cameras, all the slow motion stuff being on the RED Camera. Couple of GoPros and voila a quick, high speed jaunt with Jon for your viewing pleasure.

PS: Note how close I got to a Rally Car doing over 100km per hour on the one bend. My Sphincter closed for hours!

Ken Block versus the Stig

I am a little upset it took me this long to find this. two of our favorite characters when it comes to caning cars together at last! This was for a Ford Falcon campaign in Oz late last year. It simply begs the question, when is Ken Block going to bring his Gymkana to South Africa?

DC Shoes present "REELedit" 2012 - R30'000 Skate Video Contest

It has been a long time coming, but the awesome team at DC Shoes Africa have finally launched their incredible skate video competition. I can tell you now I will be entering! R15'000 for the skater and R15'000 for the Film guy - finally a video competition that acknowledges how much the film guy puts in! Get going peeps!
For some time there has been a calling for something new on the SA contest scene…and when looking at modern skating, a lot of the focus is on skate video parts because ALL skaters are into videos; but not everybody is into the traditional '45sec contest run in a skatepark format'...So why not run an event that appeals to everybody? … A video contest initiative is born - REELedit.
"The concept is simple – skaters need to team up with a filmer to create their own individual video part, and post it online. Then let the skateboarding community out there decide who they feel has put out the best part…The same way all the pros are judged these days – by the video parts they put out. There is no restriction to the type of skating the video focusses on – so it doesn't matter whether you skate street, miniramp, bowls, vert etc. - it's simple; just make an awesome video part that will impress the skate community out there and get them voting for you.” - Andrew Morck (DCshoesAfrica).
DCshoesAfrica has put up R30 000 cash for the best video part – half goes to the skater / the other half to the filmer. This rewards both the skater and the filmer/editor for their time, energy and skills put into the production of their video.
The window for submissions is 01 July – 01 Dec 2012 which leaves ample time to create the best videos possible. Entrants simply upload their video on the DCshoesAfrica Facebook fan page under the REELedit gallery. It is then up to the public to vote.

"The last couple years has seen some really progressive steps in the SA skate scene. Not only has our skateboarding progressed massively, but it seems there has been a shift from the industry’s side to evolve and create more interesting, interactive events... any move away from the the classic mall contest or demo would be a move in the right direction, but DC has really stepped things up here and embraced the very essence of skateboarding in this new platform. Video has always defined skateboarding and skateboarding has always been a collaborative effort between skateboarders and the people who dedicate years of their lives capturing skateboarding. This is going to be one of the most interesting and innovative skate contests ever as it's a contest for both the skater and the producer - plus it's judged by / voted by all the skaters - not just a panel of 3 has been skate judges. Kinda like an artist and a producer - put the right 2 together and you got magic. The people vote what's good and what's not. Can't wait to see what is created!" – Clint van der Schyf (AV Skateboarding).

"Having total control over the filming & editing of your own video part allows more creative avenues to put out your own individual vibe – which is what skateboarding's roots are really about – creative expression, individuality and progression." – Khule Ngubane

I finally got Lord Bryson (Royden) into studio, thanks to his new shoe sponsor, Vans. Warbot from Vans also joined us and of course the lovely guys and gal from the very talented, Bilderberg Motel. With Lord Bryson on the show (He won an event in Scotland and was given the Title), we were always going to talk surfing. Also listened to 3 of the new Bilderberg Motel tracks and looked ahead to this weekend's, Up the Creek Festival. Some lucky chaps won a pair of new sneaks each from Vans.

A kid called Talent - Skate Prodigy from the streets of Durban

I first met Thalente a few years ago when we headed up to Dallas Oberholzer's Indigo Skate Camp for a crazy downhill comp in the Valley of a Thousand Hills. We went down to his shop at the North Beach skate park on Durban's beachfront and I was confronted by a very cheeky and extremely "talented" young black skater, who wanted to know who I was there to film. I introduced him to the crazy Austrians I was with and he ended up spending the next few days with us skating around Durban.
When we heard his story of running away from home and how he was living on the streets, we were very moved. But more than this tale of tragedy, was the huge amount of stoke this kid put out there, as well as gallons of confidence. I said then that this kid from the streets could have a massive future and Thalente did not disappoint. He skates really well and is super technical. He enjoys his life and spreads the stoke of skating wherever he goes. So enjoy this video and support local skaters and great initiatives like Indigo Skate Camp! http://www.indigoskatecamp.co.za/
