Busy show this week with December upon us and the storm of events hitting. First up were the Downhill Skaters with Justin and Gabi from SAGRA, to talk about this weekend's, Hot Heels Africa, event. Celebrating 10 years, this is our only World Cup event and will see 4 of the World's best battling for the World Title at the final event of the year. It was great to have international stars, Tamara Prader and Patrick Switzer in studio.
Next up was our man of the surf forecast, Spike, from Wavescape. This week the iconic Wavescape Film Festival begins, with films showing at the Brass Bell, The Labia and of course the viewing on Clifton beach this Saturday evening. Wednesday is the Surfboard Art auction and this is well worth attending.
Next week will be very surf orientated with an ASP Judge, Andy Davis from Mahala and hopefully some skype calls from Cali and Hawaii.

Last year I found myself in the sleepy town of Kimberley, but sleepy it was not as the World's best skaters had pulled into town and taken over. It was one of the best skate events I have ever witnessed. The quality of riding was up there with the biggest events I have seen and I have been to the biggest and best. This year promises more of the same and for all you skate fans, I have an epic hamper to give away....

Day 3 dawned and I left my hacienda "Hotel" in East LA for the Nokia Theater and my highlight by miles for the day, watching the BMX Vert Ramp finals and an XGames legend making history. Jamie Bestwick took down his 6th consecutive Vert ramp Gold Medal. It was amazing to watch, especially considering we never see BMX vert in South Africa.
In the Skate Street final I called Pedro Barros from round 1. The guy was just so fast around the Park and was definitely busting way bigger airs and transfers than anyone else. It was some of the best bowl skating I have seen in a very long time.
This video is worth a watch. Incredible skating in super slow motion, to a kick ass funky track. You will be happy. The video has caused a mini storm online, as Skrillex tweeted it out and some liked that and some did not, such is the web....

It has been a long time coming, but the awesome team at DC Shoes Africa have finally launched their incredible skate video competition. I can tell you now I will be entering! R15'000 for the skater and R15'000 for the Film guy - finally a video competition that acknowledges how much the film guy puts in! Get going peeps!
For
some time there has been a calling for something new on the SA contest
scene…and when looking at modern skating, a lot of the focus is on skate
video parts because ALL skaters are into videos; but not everybody is
into the traditional '45sec contest run in a skatepark format'...So why
not run an event that appeals to everybody? … A video contest initiative
is born - REELedit.
"The
concept is simple – skaters need to team up with a filmer to create
their own individual video part, and post it online. Then let the
skateboarding community out there decide who they feel has put out the
best part…The same way all the pros are judged these days – by the video
parts they put out. There
is no restriction to the type of skating the video focusses on – so it
doesn't matter whether you skate street, miniramp, bowls, vert etc. -
it's simple; just make an awesome video part that will impress the skate
community out there and get them voting for you.” - Andrew Morck (DCshoesAfrica).
DCshoesAfrica
has put up R30 000 cash for the best video part – half goes to the
skater / the other half to the filmer. This rewards both the skater and
the filmer/editor for their time, energy and skills put into the
production of their video.
The
window for submissions is 01 July – 01 Dec 2012 which leaves ample time
to create the best videos possible. Entrants simply upload their video
on the DCshoesAfrica Facebook fan page under the REELedit gallery. It is
then up to the public to vote.

seems there has been a shift from the industry’s side to evolve and
create more interesting, interactive events... any move away from the

One of the most anticipated events on the South
African skateboarding calendar, Red Bull Manny Mania, is set to embrace
the digital realm this year, with entries to the event being via online
video submission. Scheduled to take place on 9 June 2012 at the Wave
House in Gateway, Durban, skaters wanting to enter can upload a 45
second video edit showcasing their skills on a manual pad to the
international ‘Red Bull Manny Mania’ Facebook Page to stand a chance of
qualifying for the final.
Centered around the ‘manual’ trick aka, the ‘manny’, the 2012
edition of Red Bull Manny Mania will be the third installment of the
contest locally. A Manny is essentially a skateboarding 'wheelie' - a
balancing act that is a must-do in any new skateboarder’s skill set but
can be made extremely difficult with limitless combinations.
The top three in the 2011 event - Moses Adams, Dlamini Dlamini and
Dada Marumo - will automatically qualify for the 2012 final at Wave
House. The skater that takes the 2012 Red Bull Manny Mania title will
win an all-expenses paid trip to New York, USA, to represent South
Africa in the world Red Bull Manny Mania world amateur finals.
Last year’s winner, Moses Adams, is looking forward to this year’s
competition: “Getting to go to New York to represent South Africa was
such a big experience for me and I really enjoyed it. I’m going to do my
best to defend my title and go to the world finals again this year.”
Red Bull Manny Mania has seen thousands of participants put their
two wheels to the ground in Red Bull Manny Mania events across the
globe, from America and Europe, to Africa and the Middle East. Who will
join the best this year? Who will be the chairman of the United Nations
of skate? Red Bull Manny Mania 2012 provides an opportunity for one
skater to battle their way from their neighbourhood streets to the
biggest stage in the world.

Billabong hosted the 2012 City Squared Skate event in Melbourne, Australia. Shot on the new Red Camera with frame rates up to 700 Frames, you don't miss a moment of the action. Some really good skating and look out for Durban born skater, Tommy Fynn, coming in second and ripping!
32 Australian street-skateboarding specialists gathered in Melbourne to claim Stop #1 on the SbA (Skateboarding Australia) Pro/Am Invitational Tour -- Billabong's City Squared presented by Xperia Sony Smartphone.
The custom built obstacle was daunting to say the least. Riders had to negotiate a purpose-built 'gap to ledge' feature that could be attacked from several approaches, mixing creativity and burly raw street skateboarding. The build was inspired by Melbourne's urban street spots - combining two hubba's either side of the gap to bank with a box in the middle which resembled a sub electrical box at 1.8 meters high.

It was an action packed weekend in cape Town, starting with the Red Bull Len10 Megaloop Challenge on Friday. Ruben Lenten joined us in studio to talk about the successful first time event. Saturday saw the best X festival in the history of our dear South Africa, with the Ultimate X 2012. The best of our nation's FMX, Skate, Wake and BMX stars entertained the crowd for a massive prize purse and I had Red Bull Athletes Buddy Chellan and Jean Marc in studio to chat about the event. Dustin from Skull Candy joined me in grilling the boys!
I have been waiting a long time for the Danny Way documentary! The man has led from the forefront of skating for over 2 decades and introduced the world to the Mega Ramp concept. Many of his peers have been documented and had their stories told over the years, but finally we get to see the whole Danny Way Story in - Waiting for Lightning.
I will definately be hoping for South African premiers of this film and will keep you guys in the loop!
I first met Thalente a few years ago when we headed up to Dallas Oberholzer's Indigo Skate Camp for a crazy downhill comp in the Valley of a Thousand Hills. We went down to his shop at the North Beach skate park on Durban's beachfront and I was confronted by a very cheeky and extremely "talented" young black skater, who wanted to know who I was there to film. I introduced him to the crazy Austrians I was with and he ended up spending the next few days with us skating around Durban.
When we heard his story of running away from home and how he was living on the streets, we were very moved. But more than this tale of tragedy, was the huge amount of stoke this kid put out there, as well as gallons of confidence. I said then that this kid from the streets could have a massive future and Thalente did not disappoint. He skates really well and is super technical.
