Enter a world of magic and mystery, in my own head, where surfing and snowboarding are considered real jobs! Amazing feats of daring and skill are performed every day - and that's just getting the footage onto film!
Media anarchist, film guru, surf addict and web video blogger!
I have spent time with both these guys and they are constantly smiling, happy and stoked to be riding! Meet two of South Africa's premier wakeboarders and wakeskaters, Dylan James Mitchell and Dale Nieuwstad. Filmed around South Africa with their Spanish friend in tow, this gives a good vision of who they are, where they come from and how they ride!
Tyler Wright has been caning the women's Pro Tour, including winning the season opener at Snapper Rocks this month. But it was the footage from this session at the infamous P Pass that really got my attention. The wave is big, super hollow and runs like a freight train. No problems for this gal, with brother Owen shouting support, she charges some monster pits!
While the swell poured into the North Shore, the contest directors at the Volcom Pipe Pro decided not to run the contest, as conditions were to wild and wooly. This did not stop the waiting Pipeline chargers from attacking it all day long. Amongst the horror and carnage there were some bombs, some spit as thick as a Sea Monster's spout and of course some hero making drops!
Malcolm throwing down his patented Double Whip at Halloween Jam.
I have been watching and filming the South African BMX scene for a while now and one guy that always stands out for me in free ride and competition is, Malcom Peters aka Moe. This is his latest edit and boy does it rock! Make sure to stick to then end for one of the craziest transfers I have ever seen.

The Rip Curl Pro in Portugal has had 2 lay days already, but may go live at 1pm today. Check out all the best surfers having a warm up session on Day 1.

I am a little upset it took me this long to find this. two of our favorite characters when it comes to caning cars together at last! This was for a Ford Falcon campaign in Oz late last year. It simply begs the question, when is Ken Block going to bring his Gymkana to South Africa?
Welcome to my Friday Mix with a very surf orientated vibe this week. We start with Beautiful swell lines at the world's best right hand point, Supertubes. Straight up after this is the mental slab, The Tand, being charged by the local West Coast crew or bodyboarders. We finish off with an older, but still very hot, video of surfer and bikini model, Sanoe Lake. Enjoy!
I can only chuckle away thinking of the last year of surf media and commentary. No one denied that John John Florence had the talent or the desire to be a world champion. It is just that such a song and dance have been made over Gabriel Medina and Kohole Andino. The entire surf media have been claiming these two young and phenomenal surfers as the future, with little to no similar treatment of John John. They would reply, sure John John is amazing at Pipeline and will be a definite threat at Fiji and Tahiti, but that is really, is it not? Well surf media and the world, John John just gave notice in the beach breaks of Brazil, it does not matter what the waves are doing, he wants to win and he wants a world title! Joel Parkinson swooped to the finals with his usual tube riding and incredible turns, but he had nothing to give against John John in the final, where he found himself in combo land after just 4 minutes. The old guard are starting to show chinks in their armor especially when the waves are asking for massive punts and technical aerials. John John has these on demand along with his phenomenal tube riding skills.
The results in Brazil see Joel Parkinson take the lead in the World Title race, with good mate Mick Fanning right behind him and Josh Kerr rocketing into 3rd place. John John's win takes him into 6th place on the rankings just in front of our own Jordy Smith. Heading to Fiji and the possibility of giant Cloudbreak and endless tubes, John John must be a favorite and no one on tour is going to want him in their heats with his confidence this high! I cannot wait for the event, though it is going to be night owl hours for those of us watching in South Africa.
Congrats John John!
The 2012 XXL Awards went down last week (Due to my holiday, I am reporting late on this) and the ultimate prize went to Nathan Fletcher for his mind boggling wave at Teahupoo last year. I am still struggling to figure out how a wave not ridden out won, but hell it was crazy! Fletcher won the "Ride of the Year" and the "Monster Tube" awards with this wave. He also took the overall Men's Performance Award. So a good night for Nathan.
The 2012 "Monster Paddle Award" went to Hawaiian, Dave Wassel, for a huge wave earlier in the year at Jaws in Maui. There were stacks of entries from December and January from Jaws, as the world's big wave surfers descended on the previous Tow Surf Spot.
"Biggest Wave Champion" went to Hawaiian, Garrett MacNamara, for his "90"ft ride off the coast of Portugal in 2011. Many thought this wave looked very soft, but the size judges cleared it as the biggest wave caught. Garrett also took the "Verizon Wipeout of the Year" award for a horrible bail at massive Jaws. He was trying to surf the "JetBoard" and went over the falls backwards on a monster of a wave.
The biggest skate tour dedicated to street skating returns in 2012 thanks to DC and Monster. The world's best street skaters battle it out to be the boss of the league! One can only hope and pray that this eventually comes to SA, like the Maloof. (We also need to hope that ESPN decides to broadcast these comps in SA.)
Street League Skateboarding has announced the 2012 schedule for the DC Pro Tour fueled by Monster Energy with stops in Kansas City, MO; Ontario, California; Glendale, Arizona; and Newark, NJ.. Tickets for the 2012 season will go on sale April 2nd at www.streetleague.com. The series will be available live on ESPN2, ESPN3, Street League's official facebook page, and distributed to over 198 countries via the ESPN Family of Channels.
Not sure what to do with your Saturday in Cape Town? Well then, I have your solution! Come down to the Milnerton Aquatic Club for the Pro rounds and finals of the SA Open Wake Championships. The countries best Wakeboarders and Wakeskaters will be challenging for the SA Open titles and there should be some pretty epic riding on display. Guys like Dylan Mitchell and Dale Nieuwstad, who were on my radio show on Monday eve (Podcast for download), have promised that it will be worth coming to watch!
Check out some of our best in the local Wake video Tropical Roast:
Ken Block and the Monster World Rally Team, got their 2012 race season off to a good start with his 6th consecutive win at the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood in Salem, Missouri. The super fast course and drift style corners played right into Mr Block's hands! Check out the burning Brake Calipers in the night stages. The man was pushing hard!
Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino win their sixth consecutive Rally in the 100 Acre Wood in Salem, Missouri - and was also the very first stage rally outing and win for the Ford Fiesta HFHV race car. These are the highlights. Enjoy!
For more keep your eyes peeled to DC Shoes Fan Page.
In a word, I am super "Amped", for 2012 and more of Ken Block's antics in his Ford Fiesta Rally Car. The man responsible for the now infamous "Gymkhana" videos and of course DC Shoes, will be taking on the World Rally Cross championship, Rally America, X Games and another Gymkhana World Tour. I am looking good for X Games and hope to meet the man while I am there. Never one to take himself to seriously, Ken launched the new cars with the help of comedian, Nic Swarsdon. Good to know Ken can laugh at himself...
Winter X Games 2012 has been full of huge results and momentous occasions, but this must be one of the biggest! The first ever Front Flip on a Snowmobile in competition, by Heath Frisby, won him a Gold Medal. I will have all the highlights from the Games during the week for you!
The Trials and Round 1 of competition went down at macking Pipeline, with warped, monster tubes and massive wipeouts going down. The carnage went on until the organizers realized it was getting to big and wild and they called it off for the day. Check out long time Pipe Master, Derek Ho getting absolutely guillotined! Pipeline took no prisoners!
Ok dirt fans, get ready for this. The teaser starts a little slow, but trust me, just hang on, it will be worth it!
The awesome new Motocross movie "Moto 3" by The Assignment Moving Picture Co! Featured Riders: Ryan Villopoto, Ken Roczen, Justin Barcia, Taylor Robert, Shane Watts, Jeffrey Herlings, Adam Cianciarulo, Kyle Redmond, Cody Webb, Destry Abbott, Colton Haaker, Ryan Sipes, Kevin Rookstool and so many more...
The recent paddle session at Jaws, Maui, has the whole world fascinated. The videos have been doing the rounds and the youtube views multiplying. Our very own Twig and Kate were there for the action and while Kate filmed from the safety of the cliffs - no doubt holding her breath anyway, every time Twig got hammered - Twig was out there with the boys charging.
I caught up with him online and got his feedback on this historic session...
Cpt Kai: How big was it out there?
Twig: Pretty dam big to be paddling, but what made it worse was how strong the
offshore was and this is the most difficult wind to deal with in big
waves.
Cpt Kai: It looked pretty crowded - is this common in surf this size? Twig: It's becoming more and more common and that's why it's been a mission of
mine to move out from the more popular big wave spots trying to find
something new and less crowded. Saying that only, 10 real waves where
ridden that day and only 3-5 of them where completed so the crowd wasn't the issue, the wave was!!
Cpt Kai: How bad were the beatings?
Very bad, I saw so many guys tombstoning for what seemed like an
eternity, but because it was my first time out there paddling I was
pretty conservative and didn't get beaten to badly.
Cpt Kai: How were your waves?
Twig: I had three waves in 6 hours, one I shared with another surfer, one I
wiped out on the takeoff and one I took off behind the bowl and made it
so all in all it was a good day.
Cpt Kai: Is this a sign of things to come, less tow on the really big days, as more guys start paddling?
Twig: Yes, tow surfing is a dying sport and from here on out there will be
guys paddling every big swell at the known spots. We had a day at
Dungeons this year that we should have paddled but ended up towing and I
can't see that happening again. Cpt Kai: What was the biggest wave made that day?
Twig: Dave Wassel had the biggest wave and will probably be the new world
record holder, but he just went straight and Dorian had a huge one that
he made around the corner.
Cpt Kai: Where to next Twig?
Twig: Just traveling the world surfing and trying to find new uncrowded
areas to hang out and get some waves with a few close friends...
We hope you find those waves my man and good luck on your travels (Lucky Bastard, hehe).
Meet the new face of MX racing, Dean Wilson. This kid is on a rampage in the States, winning races all over the show. He recently spent a day at the track with Helicopter to shoot, this is the video. Check out the section at about 1:40min - totally nuts! He is flying...
