The Friday Mix - RIP Michael Peterson, Perfect Powder Run & Monster Girls at the F1

MP the legend in action!
The surfing world lost one of it's biggest stars this week, with the death of Michael Peterson. He was a true originator in the first days of professional surfing, an absolute hooligan and an eccentric visionary in the water. No one understood him, but everyone loved to watch him surf.

Also in the mix today, a picture perfect on board run in Jackson Hole. With the Northern Winter Season coming to an end, we can only hope this winter in SA has some proper dumps so we can go pow pow riding in Lesotho. Then to end off, check out the life of the Monster Energy Girls at the first F1 of the season. They have it so rough, haha, not...

National Cleavage Day - SA's favorite Day

Yes it is that day of the year again, when we celebrate that wondrous creation, Boobs. National Cleavage Day is upon us and it is your patriotic duty to celebrate everything to do with Breasts! They come in all shapes and sizes, color ranges and make you feel like a child again. I am pretty sure even the ladies enjoy a little boob from time to time. So lets all take a moment and enjoy the Boobs...

Meet Big Wave Hellman, Ryan Hipwood

Not scared of a massive keg then mate!
Ryan Hipwood is one of the new breed of Ozzy Big Wave Hellman. He basically spends his life chasing rather large swells around to tow and paddle into very scary waves. Some of his exploits at massive Cloudbreak and the secret slab in West Oz, almost beggar belief. I might have soiled my wetsuit in his position to be frankly honest...

The BMX Bandit! Greg Illingworth kills it...

Greg Heading straight over the Wall Ride at Halloween Jam (Photo: Jaime Smith)
South Africa has a pretty strong BMX scene. Every year more and more guys are rocking up at the events and comps, pushing the establishment. But, they all know there is one guy they are not going to beat. There is one guy that time after time takes the wins, including at Ultimate X in 2012. That guy is Greg Illingworth. He is the best in SA and now he heads out to take on the world with Mongoose and Monster Energy. This is his latest video piece...

The King of the North Shore - John John Florence

John John very calm and relaxed on a Pipeline Bomb.
By now you all know who John John Florence is, but it may not have sunk in yet how much he rules the North Shore line up at the tender age of 20. As if winning competitions from Sunset to Pipeline and Backdoor were not enough, he just won the Performance of the Winter award in Hawaii. Just watch the video and its not hard to see why! I cannot wait for this kid to surf the WCT events at Teahupoo and Cloudbreak, it's going to be mental. Have a listen to Shea Lopez's predictions of John John's 2012 WCT future in the second video.

The Friday Mix - MOD UK, Alana Blanchard Bikini, Shaun White & Downhill MTB

Alana Blanchard makes surfing gorgeous!
For this week's Friday Mix, we have a real mix of sports. We start with FMX and the Masters of Dirt tour of the UK. This really is the world's best FMX show and makes me sad that the Cape Town show was cancelled. This is followed by the a quick teaser of Alana Blanchard, probably the world's hottest surfer. Then take a ride through the Winter XGames Europe, Superpipe, with Gold Medalist, Shaun White. We finish off with a ride down the recent World Cup Downhill course in Pietermaritburg with Red Bull rider, Gee Atherton. Enjoy and hope you ride this weekend!

Captain Kai's World on www.2ov.fm - Podcast 28

I have to say, the &Union Beers definitely added to the humor on last night's show. Thanks to big wave charger and very funny guy, Frank Solomon, for bringing a case to the show. Myself and Tyrone Rawlins were getting pretty lubricated and having a great laugh at Frank's stories from California, being Gerard Butler's stunt double and all the antics from the North Shore winter. We also brought you the latest from the European Winter XGames, Downhill Mountain Biking World Cup and all the news from the ASP World Tour.

The Bomb Surf Mag did an interview with me yesterday, check it out here - The Bomb Surf Interview

Meet Miss Zigzag 2012 - Nicole Naude, Bikini Babe

The gorgeous Miss Zag 2012, Nicole Naude (Photo: Zigzag)
We all love our home grown SA beauties, especially the ones who love the beach and wearing Bikinis! So I thought why not introduce you to the lady that walked away with the Miss Zigzag Title. Ladies and gents, it gives me great pleasure in introducing, Nicole Naude, Miss Zag 2012...

Kai: Hi Nicole, tell the readers a little about yourself:
Nicole: I was born in East London. I am a student, studying drama and psychology. I am currently living in Durban and have been since the start of High School.

Kai: First off, congrats on winning Miss Zag! How did you end up entering?
Nicole: Thank you so much. A few of my friends had entered and when I read what the competition was all about, I decided to enter as there was nothing to lose and the prizes sounded amazing. I created a profile and if people liked what I was all about then they could vote for me.

(Photo: Zigzag)
Kai: Do you surf?
Nicole: I have started surfing, I actually started learning properly before I won Miss Zag and it was such a blessing to have won a board because I have now been continuing my new hobby .

Kai: Do you read Zigzag?
Nicole: I do read ZigZag at friends houses. To be honest I am not a person who really purchase magazines.

Kai: What were your thoughts on the other ladies that entered? SA looking good on the Bikini stage? Nicole: The ladies who entered were all beautiful and had awesome bikini bodies so seeing all the girls really gives a feeling of pride in our ladies in SA and how well they look after themselves.

(Photo: Zigzag)
Kai: What are your plans moving forward?
Nicole: I am finishing my 3rd year at UKZN this year and then moving to Cape Town at the end of this year where I will be studying through correspondence and modelling and working. I plan on seeing how I do in the industry in a new city and by thrown into a foreign place to me, I intend on growing as a person and to have a bit of an adventure.

Kai: Are you single?
Nicole: Haha, yes I am single.

Kai: Do you prefer surfers, bmx, skaters or snowboarders?
Nicole: Hmmm, I would have to say surfers.

Kai: How does a guy impress you?
Nicole: A guy just needs to be himself and a whole lot of fun. A guy who can be my best friend and make me laugh is always awesome. As much as guys think a gift is impressive, I am not into flowers or chocolates- doing something thoughtful and sweet means way more to me.

(Photo: Zigzag)
Kai: Favorite place to eat out?
Nicole: Anywhere that serves sushi or a really good quality meal, there are so many to just name one.

Kai: Favorite place to go out for a good time?
Nicole: I enjoy going to Czar or Boulevard in Durban.

Kai: Favorite surfer?
Nicole: Julian Wilson

Nicole: Thank so much
Kai: No thank you! Look forward to seeing you in the Cape line up soon, albeit in a westuit and not a bikini!

Check out the behind the scenes shoot with Nicole...

Wilko surfs to Die Antwoord

Matt Wilko keeps the vids coming on his blog - Out 2 Brunch - and for his latest upload decided to use our very own, Die Antwoord. While I cannot say I am a fan of the music coming out of the band right now, in fact it hurts my ears, no one can deny that the SA music outfit are making waves, haha. What I do enjoy though, is Wilko's surfing. He surfs like a Jack Russel on speed and amphetamines! Don't believe me? Just watch the video...

Phantom Ski Shoot with Bobby Brown & Mates

Following recent trends, international Ski star, Bobby Brown, has also started his own web series, with Red Bull. The Ski boys are no longer in the background and are going huge on the slopes, in the park and in the backcountry. In this episode they get to play in front of a Phantom camera shooting at up to 1000 frames per second. I really enjoyed how the camera guy explained shooting on the Phantom and what it is like having this amazing camera to shoot with.

In this episode, we go behind the camera as Bobby Brown and the crew head into the super slo-mo world of the phantom camera in Breckenridge, Colorado for some spectacular shots of Bobby, Will Berman, Banks Gilberti, Grant Savidge, Kolby Ward, and Dane Tudor as they throw down in the park. Beer, glorious beer! Keg King's Open Tap Event

Ok, you all know I love beer more than a Catholic School girl loves Bieber! Hence, I am rather excited about this event from the good men at Keg King. What could be better than draining craft beer, ales and stout with your fellow man till the Kegs are dry? So please do join me on the 31st March at this marvelous event and we can discuss my world over cold, frothing beer!

Keg King’s Open Tap event is taking place on the 31st of March at the German Club, 6 Roodehek Terrace in Gardens from 18H00 – 00H00.
The idea is a simple one, 10 of the best brewers in SA, each offering one of their finest beers and a cider on tap. Entrance is R200, on entry the guest will get a branded beer mug, they must go around and sample each of the 9 beers and 1 cider on offer first, once they have sampled them it is Open Tap for them for the rest of the evening.
Keg King will have 10 stations around the room, each station will have a Keg King Portable Draught Unit serving one of the 10 beers. There will be staff at the stations as well. The ten beers we will have on tap will be from the following brewers: DARLING, PAULANER, DEVILS PEAK, JACK BLACK, CAMELTHORN, SAB, MITCHELLS, NAPIER, EVERSONS, TRIGGERFISH. Each brewer will be providing a minimum of 100L of their beer, so the beer will be flowing !

There will also be plenty of toilets available for those who are weak of bladder.
Tickets are R200 and include a branded beer mug.

Jacko on the North Shore

Brandon Jackson decided to give the North Shore of Hawaii a good go this year and spent an extended amount of time there proving himself at Backdoor, Pipeline and the Food Land check outs. You will notice Josh Redman, Frank Solomon and Twig making cameos in the video as they also dedicated a lot of time to chasing the Shore this winter. Pretty short video, but I liked the edit and some good surfing from Jacko.

Some Crazy BMX with Brandon Loupos

This video just gets better and better as it goes. There are some incredible tricks thrown down towards the end, so you wanna watch it all the way through! (Even a double backflip.) Thanks to Moe Peters for the link ;)

Been filming on and off for the last three months and Brandon went up to Queensland for three weeks, but I couldn't get up there. Brandon is sponsored by Monster Skatepark, X-rated Helmets, Above All Bmx, Aussie Freestylers, Hyper BMX and Woodward West! The biggest BMX Dirt Jumps ever - Dane Searls RIP

Dane Searls conquered his dream 2 days before he died. RIP
The BMX dudes were talking about this video the whole day at the recent Ditch Jam and I had to find it for myself. After watching it I was pretty blown away, not only by the incredible riding, but also the story behind it. Pretty tragic that the guy died just 2 days after achieving his goal of doing the biggest jumps ever. Sure he is flying over mega dirt jumps in the sky now!

December 20, 2011 -- The final video release for Professional Freestyle BMX rider Dane Searls sees him successfully ride the biggest dirt jumps in history, clearing distances up to 60 feet (18 metres) on a BMX. The Giants of Dirt Project began in 2010 when Dane Searls brought the idea to Unit Clothing, his sponsor. Over the next 12 months, together they built and tested the line of jumps in Boonah, (west of the Gold Coast, Queensland) on the farm of fellow Unit rider Freestyle Motocross Pro Matt Schubring. Sheer determination saw Dane push through many painful crashes and set backs, including the devastating Queensland floods of 2010. Dane finally completed his life long goal in November 2011, by riding and pulling tricks through the entire set of jumps. Giants of Dirt 3 is the realization of Dane's dream. A custom built drop in ramp was constructed and the final jump in the set of four jumps measures 60 feet (18 metres) from dirt take off to dirt landing. Two days after fulfilling his dream, Dane was involved in an accident and suffered critical head injuries, placing him in a coma for five days. Dane passed away on November 25, 2011 in hospital due to injuries sustained. His death sent shock waves through the BMX community and he will be long remembered as an amazingly kind person and as a professional athlete who pushed the boundaries of the sport of BMX.

R.I.P "The King Of BMX Dirt" Dane Searls.

Quiksilver Pro Round Up 2012

Taj Burrows on route to the Number 1 Slot (Photo: ASP)
The WCT finally got under way with the Quik Pro and after a year of drama in 2011, this year could be the same. Taj Burrows walks away for the 3rd time with Quik Pro honors and the number 1 spot on the rankings for the start of the year. He beat an in form Adriano da Souza in the final, after a very controversial victory over Jordy Smith in the Semi's. I will give it to Taj though, he surfed really well throughout the competition and the guy is looking fast and loose as always. I give Adriano a lot of grief most of the time, but even I must admit that he was ripping. The guy has clearly been working on his aerial game and he came to the party in this event. Needing a high 7 in the final, he went for broke with a massive punt, but just came short.

Another guy who was firing all event was Josh kerr. The tiny Ozzy is looking pretty motivated to win and will be worth keeping an eye on for the rest of the season. Everyone was waiting to see what the 40 year old Kelly Slater would do and after a great start to the event, he got knocked out in the Quarters. He finds himself back in 5th place on the rankings and this will probably just motivate him even more to come out firing at Bells.

After last year's controversy with the judging, this event had a few close calls. There were certainly a number of surfers who would have been questioning their losses. The most puzzling one had to be Semi 2 with Taj just beating Jordy Smith. I have watched the heat over a couple of times, I have to be honest, I think Jordy was very underscored on his top ride. Watch the heat review and let me know your thoughts - Taj Vs Jordy Semi 2

The tour now heads off to Bells Beach where Taj will be looking to consolidate his Tour lead. So many times the bridesmaid in the World title hunt, can this be the year that he proves he is a world champ? Jordy Smith also has a lot to prove after leading the tour last year till his season ending injury at Teahupoo. Sitting in 3rd, a good result at bells could see our man making a solid push for the Number 1 slot in 2012. Is Kelly still hungry? Come on, the man only knows one way and that is be the Champ! He will be at Bells.

SNAPPER ROCKS, Queensland/Australia (Sunday, March 4, 2012) – The final day of the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover culminated today with perennial ASP World Title threat Taj Burrow (AUS), 33, and four-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, taking the respective wins in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at the primary venue of Snapper Rocks. The opening stop on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast enjoyed sunny weather, light winds and a capacity crowd for the final day of competition, with the world’s best surfers putting on a spectacular display of high-performance surfing. Burrow defeated dangerous South American Adriano De Souza (BRA), 25, in a Final that came down to the wire. De Souza caught a wave in the dying minutes and launched into a massive air-reverse, requiring a 7.87 out of a possible 10 to take the lead. The judges deliberated until after the siren sounded and when it was announced that De Souza came a mere 0.27 short, Burrow was chaired up the beach and declared the 2012 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast champion. “I feel so good now!” Burrow said. “I had a really good event last year, but came up short in the Final against Kelly (Slater). Then today when I found myself against Adriano (De Souza), I was really nervous because he got me in a Final in Brazil last year. He’s really tough and I don’t like competing against him to be honest. There was a lot of weight on my shoulders in that Final so it’s pretty rewarding to come out on top.” The ASP World Championship Tour will next head to Victoria, Australia for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, stop no. 2 of 10 in the race for the 2012 ASP World Title. “I’ve been going for the ASP World Title for a while now,” Burrow said. “I don’t know what to say. I just want to surf my best and hope that the rest falls into place. I love Bells. I love throwing on a full wetsuit and doing some big arcs in the Bells Bowl.” De Souza finished runner-up at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast for the second time, after coming 2nd to Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, in 2009. De Souza was easily one of the event’s top performers this season with gouging turns and inverted aerials taking him to a podium finish. “I’m really happy with my result here today,” De Souza said. “It was such an amazing Final. Last year Taj (Burrow) and I had such a great heat here as well. It was one of the best heats of my life and he beat me. It’s amazing to be on the podium here again. In 2009, it was me and Joel (Parkinson). It’s a great way to start the year and I’m happy to be back up here.” Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion, her fourth Roxy Pro Gold Coast title after defeating ASP Top 17 sophomore Laura Enever (AUS), 20, in a hard-fought Final. Gilmore was dominant throughout the event, posting scores in the excellent range in every encounter throughout the draw. Gilmore jumps back to No. 1 on the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour ratings, a spot she lost at this event last year after holding it for four years. “To be carried up the beach with your friends underneath you with thousands of people around has got to be one of the best feelings in the world,” Gilmore said. “It took me back to 2005 when I won here as a grom. Last year went so quickly and it felt like I didn’t even exist on the rankings and that fire wasn’t really there. This year it’s so good to have that back! My cheeks are so sore from smiling already.” Enever, who defeated Gilmore in the Quarterfinals of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast last year, today was unable to replicate last year’s magic but managed a career-best Runner-Up today against Gilmore. This is the first ASP Women’s World Tour final appearance for Enever, who finished 10th on last year’s ratings. “Coming into this event I felt like a new competitor,” Enever said. “I’m so stoked to make it all the way to the Final. It was so good to be out there with Steph (Gilmore). She’s coming back now which is great to see. It’s a good way to start off the year. I’m in the ASP Women’s World Title race and it’s not a fluke. I want to be up here for the rest of the year and hopefully go one better next event.” Kelly Slater (USA), 40, reigning 11-time ASP World Champion and last year’s Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast winner was eliminated in the Quarterfinals this morning by Josh Kerr (AUS), 27. Slater had previously defeated Kerr four times on the 2011 ASP World Championship Tour and was a favourite to take the heat today. However, it was Kerr who advanced thanks to one of a massive forehand air-reverse in the final minutes of the heat. “If the waves were better I would be really bummed that I lost,” Slater said. “I got one at the end that I thought would be good, I went for the carving 360 and got stuck. Then I turned around and Josh (Kerr) was on a pretty nice one and he got that air at the end. He’s always going to be a threat in conditions like this where he can throw big airs. I got Josh a few times last year, we had four Quarterfinal battles last year where I got him, so he owed me a couple. It never feels good to lose, but I’m happy for Josh. I’m not sure if I’m going to Bells. I’m just going to go find some good waves in the next few weeks. Then I’ll figure out what I’m going to do for the year.”

Highlights from the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast are available via www.quiksilverlive.com/progoldcoast/2012
The next stop on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour will be the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford from April 3 – 14, 2012. For more information, check out www.ASPWorldTour.com

Mick Fanning and thumping P-Pass

Mick Fanning warmed up for the Quik Pro with some serious tubes at P-Pass. He makes it look so easy, but believe me, those are some deadly dangerous tubes!

Trike Drifting - The new Fad?

We are bombarded with new crazes on a monthly basis and some stick around, while others disappear as fast as they arrived. The latest, fresh from the States is Trike drifting. Travis Pastrana and the Nitro Circus crew made these small kids bikes popular, launching them off big kickers and mega ramps for laughs. Now, some bright spark has had the idea of covering the big back wheels with PVC so that you can slide them, "Drift" around corners. The video makes them look pretty simple to use, but I am not sure about doing this barefoot?

Thanks PJ!

The Friday Mix with Captain Kai

Ok peeps, thought I would try something new every Friday. I get sent so many video links through the week and I enjoy almost all of them, but sometimes the timing is not right, or the the video just does not fit into my schedule and bottom line is that it never gets posted. So, from now on, every Friday, I will post the, Friday Mix, an eclectic mix of web videos that I have come across and know you will enjoy.

This week we have Kiting in the Islands (Amazing jibbing on Kites), Bodyboarding a scary shore break in Brazil, BMX Dirt Competition with Red Bull in New Zealand and Freeride Mountain Biking in Indonesia.
