Bikini Surf Shoot in Mexico

What can I say other than it's good looking girls, bikinis and some surfing. Nice little edit...

Captain Kai's World on www.2ov.fm - Podcast Show 34

Commentating Billabong SA Champs over the weekend.
The show this week was all about surfing and the Billabong SA Champs that went down over the weekend in Cape Town. I was joined by finalists Dan Redman, Open Mens and Tarryn Chudleigh, Open Woman, as well as Under 20 Boys Winner, Mikey February. Big Wave surfer, Frank Solomon, joined us just to add some "drama", in the form of his chirping with Dan. Great music, good talk and awesome times...

DC Shoes present "REELedit" 2012 - R30'000 Skate Video Contest

It has been a long time coming, but the awesome team at DC Shoes Africa have finally launched their incredible skate video competition. I can tell you now I will be entering! R15'000 for the skater and R15'000 for the Film guy - finally a video competition that acknowledges how much the film guy puts in! Get going peeps!
For some time there has been a calling for something new on the SA contest scene…and when looking at modern skating, a lot of the focus is on skate video parts because ALL skaters are into videos; but not everybody is into the traditional '45sec contest run in a skatepark format'...So why not run an event that appeals to everybody? … A video contest initiative is born - REELedit.
"The concept is simple – skaters need to team up with a filmer to create their own individual video part, and post it online. Then let the skateboarding community out there decide who they feel has put out the best part…The same way all the pros are judged these days – by the video parts they put out. There is no restriction to the type of skating the video focusses on – so it doesn't matter whether you skate street, miniramp, bowls, vert etc. - it's simple; just make an awesome video part that will impress the skate community out there and get them voting for you.” - Andrew Morck (DCshoesAfrica).
DCshoesAfrica has put up R30 000 cash for the best video part – half goes to the skater / the other half to the filmer. This rewards both the skater and the filmer/editor for their time, energy and skills put into the production of their video.
The window for submissions is 01 July – 01 Dec 2012 which leaves ample time to create the best videos possible. Entrants simply upload their video on the DCshoesAfrica Facebook fan page under the REELedit gallery. It is then up to the public to vote.

"The last couple years has seen some really progressive steps in the SA skate scene. Not only has our skateboarding progressed massively, but it seems there has been a shift from the industry’s side to evolve and create more interesting, interactive events... any move away from the the classic mall contest or demo would be a move in the right direction, but DC has really stepped things up here and embraced the very essence of skateboarding in this new platform. Video has always defined skateboarding and skateboarding has always been a collaborative effort between skateboarders and the people who dedicate years of their lives capturing skateboarding. This is going to be one of the most interesting and innovative skate contests ever as it's a contest for both the skater and the producer - plus it's judged by / voted by all the skaters - not just a panel of 3 has been skate judges. Kinda like an artist and a producer - put the right 2 together and you got magic. The people vote what's good and what's not. Can't wait to see what is created!" – Clint van der Schyf (AV Skateboarding).

"Having total control over the filming & editing of your own video part allows more creative avenues to put out your own individual vibe – which is what skateboarding's roots are really about – creative expression, individuality and progression." – Khule Ngubane

Billabong SA Champs 2012 - Wrap Up

Max Armstrong with a big Slob Air, winning the Zigzag Blowing Up Award (Photo:AVG)
Lets get one thing straight off of the bat, South Africa has plenty of surf talent. Over the 4 days of the SA Champs in Cape Town I saw plenty to make us positive about the future of this countries surfing. From gale force onshore and rainy Long Beach, to shifty and difficult Misty Cliffs, the surfers in this contest were ripping. I know, because I was there for every minute of every heat - I was commentating.

In the Girls it was Tanika Hoffman who really impressed me the whole event. She ran out of steam in the finals, but that's ok. A bit more international experience and a little more killer instinct and she can go far. (She is a super nice, maybe to nice. She needs some aggro out in the water.) In the Woman's competition Nikita Robb was in a league of her own. Even in the free surf before Day 4 got under way, she was the only woman out in the line up at Misty Cliffs mixing it with the guys. She won hands down and I hope she takes that win on the road to France with her and back to the WCT.

In the boys division one guy stood way above the others. Mikey February is looking the full picture. Big power turns, the full air repertoire on demand and he simply makes surfing a heat look casual and easy. Like a mix between Parko and Jordy. The kid has a big future ahead of him. Max Armstrong is also worth looking out for. The kid was swinging with guys 2-3 years older and holding his own. I also enjoyed watching Jared Veldhuis surf and will be worth keeping an eye on him.

In the men it is hard to start. The old guard of Greg Emslie and Shane Thorne, still ripping and giving it hard to the younger guys. Ryan Payne called it when named Greg, "The Wave Whisperer". Dan Redman was on fire. He kept it simple, by which I mean he treated waves with disdain, power carving and snapping their lips into annihilation. Beyrick de Vries is the complete package. He busted some of the biggest and cleanest airs I have seen in competition and backed this up with solid turns and tube riding. Casey Grant flew a little under the radar, but he certainly made it count when it mattered. Casey is awesome to watch surf!

So have no fear - we have the surfers, now we just need them to get the right support to go out there and take over the world.

Results:
In the team awards it was Western Province continuing their undefeated series of victories on home soil. WP have yet to be beaten whenever the SA Champs are held in Cape Town.

In the U20 Girls Heidi Palmboom from KZNC is the new champion. She beat Tanika Hoffman (WP), Emma Smith (EP) and Nikita Kekana (SKZN) into second, third and fourth place respectively.

The U20 Boys was an air-off between Mikey February (WP) and Dylan Lightfoot (EP), with local boy February getting the nod and beating Lightfoot into second. Jarred Veldhuis (EP) was third and Steven Sawyer (EP) came in fourth place.

Nikita Robb from Border was the eventual winner in the Open Women’s division, retaining her title in the process. She beat Chantelle Rautenbach (Bol) in second, Tarryn Chudleigh (WP) in third and Krystal Tavenor (Bol) in fourth place.

The 2012 Open Mens Champion is Casey Grant (SKZN). Dan Redman (KZNC) was a close second, ahead of Beyrick De Vries (KZNC) in third and defending champion Greg Emslie (Bor) in fourth.

The VonZipper Air Show was a punt-fest into the cross shore conditions, with Diran Zakarian (Bol) taking it, and the R1000.

One of the new awards, the Kustom Kustomized Maneuver, went to Jared Veldhuis (WP) along with the R1000 prizemoney.

The DaKine Highest Heat Score Award and R1000 went to Dan Redman for the highest heat score of the event with 17 points.

The Zigzag Blowing Up Award and R3000 went to Max Armstrong (WP).

The BuchuLife Performance Award and R2000 went to Nikita Kekana (SKZN)

The final team placings were:
1. WP – 43950
2. KZNC – 38782
3. EP – 37418
4. BOR – 36840
5. BOL – 35528
6. SKZN – 33990
7. SC – 24660
8. Zul – 19736

Billabong SA Champs 2012 - Day 1

Dylan Lightfoot on his way to winning his Round 1 Heat in the /20 Boys on Day 1. (Photo: AVG)
Ok, so Day 1 of the Billabong SA Champs rolled through and after a shaky start the waves and conditions at Long Beach improved throughout the day. I managed to survive the first long day on the mic and there was plenty of good surfing to keep me entertained. My standouts for Day 1 were Greg Emslie, the defending Champion, who scored the highest heat score of the day in Round 1 and Berick de Vries, who launched 2 big airs in his heat, including a really clean Air reverse. In the Juniors, it was Dylan Lightfoot and Mikey February who stood out and ripped to victory in their Round 1 heats. Pretty stoked to be the commentator for this event and we are also doing the daily videos, so check out our first day highlights video...

Red Bull Manny Mania 2012 - Have you entered?

The winner of the 2011 Red Bull Manny Mania skateboarding contest, Moses Adams from Cape Town, executes a highly technical manual during the 2011 final. Adams went no to represent South Africa at the Red Bull Manny Mania grand final in New York, and the winner of the 2012 edition will follow suit, winning an all-expenses paid trip to NYC to take on the world's best skateboarders. (Photo © Tyrone Bradley/Red Bull Photofiles)
One of the most anticipated events on the South African skateboarding calendar, Red Bull Manny Mania, is set to embrace the digital realm this year, with entries to the event being via online video submission. Scheduled to take place on 9 June 2012 at the Wave House in Gateway, Durban, skaters wanting to enter can upload a 45 second video edit showcasing their skills on a manual pad to the international ‘Red Bull Manny Mania’ Facebook Page to stand a chance of qualifying for the final.

Centered around the ‘manual’ trick aka, the ‘manny’, the 2012 edition of Red Bull Manny Mania will be the third installment of the contest locally.  A Manny is essentially a skateboarding 'wheelie' - a balancing act that is a must-do in any new skateboarder’s skill set but can be made extremely difficult with limitless combinations.

The top three in the 2011 event - Moses Adams, Dlamini Dlamini and Dada Marumo - will automatically qualify for the 2012 final at Wave House. The skater that takes the 2012 Red Bull Manny Mania title will win an all-expenses paid trip to New York, USA, to represent South Africa in the world Red Bull Manny Mania world amateur finals.

Last year’s winner, Moses Adams, is looking forward to this year’s competition: “Getting to go to New York to represent South Africa was such a big experience for me and I really enjoyed it. I’m going to do my best to defend my title and go to the world finals again this year.”

Red Bull Manny Mania has seen thousands of participants put their two wheels to the ground in Red Bull Manny Mania events across the globe, from America and Europe, to Africa and the Middle East. Who will join the best this year? Who will be the chairman of the United Nations of skate? Red Bull Manny Mania 2012 provides an opportunity for one skater to battle their way from their neighbourhood streets to the biggest stage in the world.

To enter, head to www.facebook.com/redbullmannymania.

*Entry into Red Bull Manny Mania is restricted to:
- Anyone aged 14 (as of June 9, 2012) or older who is a resident of South Africa.

Captain Kai's World on www.2ov.fm - Podcast Show 33

I really enjoyed last night's show...
Show 33 had such a wide variety of stuff going on, it made me extremely happy! I had Dums and Marcel from Dragon Power talking about their fights at this last weekend's Fight Night in Cape Town. Jean-Marc Johannes (Skater) pulled round to tell us about the Resurrection Jam over the weekend in the Jozi area. We had Greg Illingworth (BMX) skyping in from the UK to tell us all about the Red Bull "Empire of Dirt" and his plans for the next few months. Then Tyrone Rawlins joined me to chat AMA Supercross and the Billabong Pro in Rio. Shew, what a show...

Tod Potter wins on the biggest FMX Track ever - Red Bull XFighters USA

Tod Potter won his first Red Bull XFighters this past weekend on what most people are referring to as the biggest FMX course ever built. Don't believe me? Check out this video...

American Todd Potter was the king of the hill at the second stop of the $1 million 2012 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour on Saturday, mastering the biggest and most challenging course in the history of the sport in front of an enthusiastic Southern California crowd.
Todd Potter was the master of the 60-foot high step up that scared half of the field away from the biggest hill jump ever included in a Red Bull X-Fighters course to beat Frenchman Thomas Pagès in a thrilling duel of fearless aerial specialists under the blazing heat of Southern California. American Wes Agee also thrived on the hill-filled California-style track, getting a a superb third place in his first-ever competition and winning the Swatch Best Move.

John John Florence wins the Billabong Pro Rio - Enters the World Title Race

John John gives notice! (Photo: ASP)
I can only chuckle away thinking of the last year of surf media and commentary. No one denied that John John Florence had the talent or the desire to be a world champion. It is just that such a song and dance have been made over Gabriel Medina and Kohole Andino. The entire surf media have been claiming these two young and phenomenal surfers as the future, with little to no similar treatment of John John. They would reply, sure John John is amazing at Pipeline and will be a definite threat at Fiji and Tahiti, but that is really, is it not? Well surf media and the world, John John just gave notice in the beach breaks of Brazil, it does not matter what the waves are doing, he wants to win and he wants a world title! Joel Parkinson swooped to the finals with his usual tube riding and incredible turns, but he had nothing to give against John John in the final, where he found himself in combo land after just 4 minutes. The old guard are starting to show chinks in their armor especially when the waves are asking for massive punts and technical aerials. John John has these on demand along with his phenomenal tube riding skills.

The results in Brazil see Joel Parkinson take the lead in the World Title race, with good mate Mick Fanning right behind him and Josh Kerr rocketing into 3rd place. John John's win takes him into 6th place on the rankings just in front of our own Jordy Smith. Heading to Fiji and the possibility of giant Cloudbreak and endless tubes, John John must be a favorite and no one on tour is going to want him in their heats with his confidence this high! I cannot wait for the event, though it is going to be night owl hours for those of us watching in South Africa.
Congrats John John!

Wok interviews Twig - The Haters come out!

Wok loves himself and his balls, your opinion, does not even enter his head...
By now most of you are aware of my good mate Wok and his "Self Absorbed" creation that is his blog - I am Wok. He has been putting famous surfers on the hot seat and calling the interviews, Between Wok and a Hard Place. Generally he manages to put the guests onto the back foot, almost embarrassing them, while remaining aloof and non emotional. Twig manages to break that facade and even gets Wok to crack a laugh. Twig also has some good points and you get a good feel for what his mission is all about. This is a really funny interview, but what is even funnier is the response it got from one "hater" out there in FB land (See Below.) To be honest mate, if you expected anything else from Wok, you have been living under a rock! Furthermore curry gives you Diarrhea not the Wok.

Billabong XXL Awards 2012 - The Winners

The 2012 XXL Awards went down last week (Due to my holiday, I am reporting late on this) and the ultimate prize went to Nathan Fletcher for his mind boggling wave at Teahupoo last year. I am still struggling to figure out how a wave not ridden out won, but hell it was crazy! Fletcher won the "Ride of the Year" and the "Monster Tube" awards with this wave. He also took the overall Men's Performance Award. So a good night for Nathan.

The 2012 "Monster Paddle Award" went to Hawaiian, Dave Wassel, for a huge wave earlier in the year at Jaws in Maui. There were stacks of entries from December and January from Jaws, as the world's big wave surfers descended on the previous Tow Surf Spot.

"Biggest Wave Champion" went to Hawaiian, Garrett MacNamara, for his "90"ft ride off the coast of Portugal in 2011. Many thought this wave looked very soft, but the size judges cleared it as the biggest wave caught. Garrett also took the "Verizon Wipeout of the Year" award for a horrible bail at massive Jaws. He was trying to surf the "JetBoard" and went over the falls backwards on a monster of a wave.

Kate Upton - The Bikini Cat Daddy Dance

The gorgeous Kate Upton recently joined the ranks of the Skull Candy nation and to celebrate, I thought I would post this video of her dancing in a very skimpy bikini. The original video was deemed to "Hot" for Youtube and was pulled within hours of being launched. Luckily, many had already ripped and reposted it. I am hoping my relationship with Skull Candy gets me a meet at some point. Nothing wrong with dreaming ...
